Starting his career with ‘Socha Na Tha’, Abhay Deol’s latet film, which released last week, is ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye’. His ‘Ek Challis Ki Last Local’ was not very well received by the audience, but his subsequent release, ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd’ went to do good business at the box office. And although ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’ failed to do wonders at the box office, Abhay’s performance was well appreciated by the audience. This Deol family’s wonder boy has always managed to find a place in the heart of the audience with his films, but has always been compared to his popular brothers; Sunny and Bobby Deol, on which Abhay says,
“Comparisons have been there since a long time now and it is obvious because I belong to the same family. I do not compare with them, since they are my elder brothers and I have great respect for them and their work, but at the same time you cannot stop people from making comparisons. And I don’t give much importance to these things, since it is very natural for people to make comparisons, but down the line, someday people will stop doing it. But at the same time, I would like to add that people are talking more about my films rather than the family, which was not the case with my first 3-4 releases, wherein they were only talking about the family. These days, the audience is talking about the choices of the films that I have been a part of and I hope that they will only be talking about my films.”
Although his films have not been huge successes, but his uncle; Dharmendra and cousins; Sunny and Bobby Deol have always been very supportive & have always appreciated his work.
Abhay Deol says, “My uncle; Dharmendraji has always been there to support me. Actually, my father was always worried about the kind of films that I have done and should be doing, but my uncle used to talk to my father and tell him that whatever decision I have taken are right & if stardom has to come, it will come to him, but the most important thing is to work hard, which was a very big lesson for me in life.”
On one hand, although he has not got many films in his kitty, but he has only chosen selected films, on which Abhay elaborates, “I have always been choosy with my films & it has always been that way. It’s not that I have become choosy, and I was choosy at the time of my first film also, and I acted in ‘Socha Na Tha’ because I liked the movie a lot. So, I have been this way since those days, and I think it is very important to be choosy; you have to have an understanding of yourself as an actor, to figure out my negative points and positive points, so I will choose a script, which will help me to make optimum use of my positives. “
After giving powerful performances in many films, Abhay’s role in ‘OLLO’ has been appreciated by the audience and his portrayal of a role of a thief is all set to bring a smile on the audience’s faces. ‘OLLO’ is directed by Dibankar Bannerjee, who had directed the hit comedy; ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, and Abhay Deol is in awe with this young director, he says, “Dibankar is a very very good director, and all of us in the team have put in a lot of effort to make this film. This film has good content, substance, comedy and is an entertaining family film, which I think the audiences will thoroughly enjoy. I absolutely love the film and I hope that the people appreciate our effort.”
Abhay has only worked with new directors in each of his films, whether it has been ‘Socha Na Tha’ or ‘Ahista Ahista’, ‘Ek Challis Ki Last Local’ or even ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’. On this Abhay comments, “It was merely a coincidence that which scripts I liked were from newcomer directors. And as I have already said that for me the script is very important and the 1st step in choosing a film is the script of the film. After the script, I have a look at whose directing the film and who is producing it. So, the scripts that I have liked have been of debut directors.”
Unfortunately for Abhay Deol, in the wake of the terror attacks in Mumbai, ‘OLLO’ got off to a dismal opening last Friday, but a strong word of mouth about the movie ensured that the collections in the last weekend were decent. Being a part of a legendary family of Bollywood with tremendous talent, we wish that this Deol continues to strike the right cord with the audience. |
